Day trips by bus from Fira
Santorini's bus network is a star with Fira at the centre. A day trip by bus is therefore one spoke out and the same spoke back, or two spokes with a change at Fira in between. Which trips work depends entirely on how many departures KTEL prints for that spoke.
The short answer
Oia, Kamari and Perissa work as day trips on any timing because KTEL prints departures every half hour or better through the day and evening [source]. Akrotiri works with a late start (first bus 08:30) [source]. Vlychada and Monolithos are half-day trips built around four and seven departures respectively [source]. Vourvoulos is a ten-minute trip, out at 14:00 and back at 14:10, and nothing else [source].
Step by step
The rule for every trip
Every corridor starts and ends at Fira, and KTEL publishes no guaranteed connections between corridors [source]. Combining two destinations in one day means riding back to Fira and taking a fresh published departure; allow your own margin.
Oia
The classic. Departures from Fira every half hour from 10:00 to 22:00, return from Oia every half hour to 22:20, fare €2.20 [source, source]. Read the sunset guide before you commit to an evening return.
Kamari and the beach
The densest timetable on the island: 33 departures each way, last back 23:15, fare €2.20 over 7.3 km [source, source]. Ancient Thera on the hill above the village is not a fare stage; the climb starts from Kamari [source].
Perissa and Perivolos
Hourly through the day with extra departures marked "EXP" that KTEL does not explain, last back 22:30 EXP, fare €2.70 [source, source]. Perivolos shares the fare row but no stop list is published [source].
Akrotiri, Red Beach and the prehistoric city
First bus 08:30, hourly to 21:00, last back 21:15, €2.20 to either the village or the beach stage [source, source]. The archaeological site takes its name from the village [source] and is not a fare stage of its own.
Vlychada
Four departures each way and a last return at 17:30 [source]. Go on the 10:00 and come back on the 14:30 or 17:30; there is no evening. The fare is the island's one disputed figure, €2.80 on the fare table and 2,70 € on the PDF panel [source, source].
The wine villages: Pyrgos, Megalochori, Emporio
KTEL publishes fares to all three from Fira — €2.20 each [source] — but prints no departure column for any of them [source]. The published answer is to ask at the Fira station which Perissa or Akrotiri departure serves the village you want. Wikipedia places Pyrgos about 7 km and Emporio about 12 km from Fira [source].
Two spokes in one day
Oia in the morning and Kamari in the afternoon works because both corridors have half-hourly departures [source]. Vlychada plus anything is tight because of its 17:30 last return [source]. Vourvoulos plus anything is impossible: its only outbound departure is 14:00 and its last return 14:10 [source].
What goes wrong
The older KTEL web table, still linked from many blogs, prints far fewer departures than the current PDF — 15 instead of 26 each way for Perissa, and last returns an hour earlier for Oia and Kamari [source, source]. A day planned from the wrong edition either wastes the evening or misses the last bus. Check the edition date on the sheet you are holding.
