What Emporio does best

Emporio (also written Emporeio) is the biggest village in the south of Santorini, a maze of lanes wrapped around the Goulas fortress and the Kastelli quarter. Wikipedia places it 12 km from Fira; KTEL publishes a €2.20 fare for the ride.

The fortified core with its narrow covered passages was built for defence against pirates; it is the most atmospheric medieval quarter on the island.

The windmills above the village

A line of old windmills on the ridge is a short uphill walk with views across the southern plain to Perissa.
