Worth your time

What Kamari does best

Kamari is where Santorini goes flat: a dark volcanic-sand beach stretching beneath the limestone bulk of Mesa Vouno, backed by a genuinely pleasant pedestrian promenade of tavernas and shops. It is the island’s most complete beach resort — and one of the corridors KTEL publishes from Fira.

The promenade

Kamari’s car-free seafront runs the length of the beach — the best stretch on the island for an unhurried dinner with your feet nearly in the sand.

Open-air cinema

A garden cinema screening films under the stars on summer evenings is Kamari’s quiet institution. Check the season’s programme locally.

Ancient Thera above

On the ridge of Mesa Vouno sit the ruins of the classical city of Thera — temples, an agora and cliff-edge views over both coasts. It is reached by a switchback road or a steep footpath from Kamari.

Good to know

  • Black sand gets scorching by midday — bring sandals for the walk to the water.
  • The beach is organised: sunbeds and umbrellas are rentals from the adjacent tavernas.
  • Heading back for a Fira sunset dinner? Note the last published departure before you order dessert.
