What Pyrgos does best

Pyrgos Kallistis is built amphitheatrically on a hill in the middle of the island, roughly 7 km from Fira according to Wikipedia, with views in almost every direction from its Venetian castle quarter. KTEL publishes fares to Pyrgos from Fira and from Athinios port.

The Kasteli quarter

Lanes climb through the old Venetian fortress settlement to the top of the hill; the view takes in both coasts.

Profitis Ilias above the village

The monastery on the island’s highest point is reached by road from Pyrgos; there is no bus to the summit.

Good to know

  • The bus stop is on the main road below the village; the climb to the castle is on foot.
  • Ancient Thera and Profitis Ilias are not served by any published KTEL fare stage.
