Summer heat and crowds: timing Santorini by bus

In July and August the problem is everyone else. Every corridor funnels through the one bus station in Fira, the caldera villages fill with day visitors, and the walk between stops happens in full sun. None of this needs a car to solve. It needs timing.

The short answer

Travel early, come back before the evening rush, and know the last bus before you set out: every corridor's first and last departures are in the table below, from the PDF of 1 November 2026 [Source]. Vlychada's last bus back leaves in the early afternoon; Kamari's and Perissa's run into the evening [Source]. KTEL's current PDF prints one departure list per corridor and states no frequency, so a full bus means waiting for the next printed one [Source].

Step by step

Why the queues happen

Every corridor starts and ends at the Fira bus station [Source], so a change between two places is a change in Fira, in the same crowd. In Oia, everyone who came for the sunset leaves within minutes of it; the reviewed Oia page warns that the queue back to Fira is longest just after the sun drops [Source]. On cruise days the Port Fund's cruise page describes ships anchoring in the caldera and passengers landing at Fira's old port or Athinios [Source], which adds day visitors to the same streets.

Timing that works

  • Leave for a beach in the morning and come back before the late-afternoon return, when everyone does the same.
  • See Oia in the morning or at midday, and watch the sunset from Firostefani or Imerovigli instead: their corridor runs back to Fira, though it stops earlier than Oia's, and the caldera path is a walk [Source, Source].
  • If a particular bus matters, be at the stop for the one before it.
  • Use the airport bus away from the evening peak; its last departure from the airport is on the airport page [Source].

Heat

The walks between stops, the steps in Oia and Fira and the caldera path have stretches in full sun. Carry water, cover your head, and plan walks for the morning or the last hours of daylight. The Akrotiri excavation is under a roof, which makes it a plan for the hottest hours [Source].

When the bus is full or gone

The municipality says taxis are limited in number and waits can be long in peak season, and that taxis do not use meters, so agree the price before you get in [Source]. A transfer booked ahead is the option you can arrange in advance for an airport run or a late ferry; confirm the meeting point, and see the airport and port pages.

What goes wrong

The station board, not a screenshot. KTEL's PDF and its older web table disagree on several last buses, Oia's among them [Source, Source], and summer crowds repeat old times with confidence. Check the current PDF or ask at Fira on the day.

Not reachable by bus

  • Sunset on the water: no KTEL service; boat trips run their own transport.
  • Ammoudi Bay below Oia: no fare stage; it is steps down from Oia [Source, Source].

Quick answers

Does KTEL print extra summer buses?

KTEL's current PDF prints one departure list per direction with no seasonal variants and no frequency, so this guide cannot say more buses run than are printed [Source].

What time is the last bus back from Oia?

The last departure in the Oia column of the table above, from the PDF of 1 November 2026 [Source].

Can I pre-book a seat on a KTEL bus?

No source this guide uses publishes seat reservations for KTEL's island buses; the airport says tickets for its bus are sold by the conductor [Source].
