Planning guide
Luggage, children and reduced mobility on Santorini’s buses
Travelling with a suitcase, a pushchair, small children or reduced mobility changes which car-free plan works. This page sets out what the official sources publish, and says plainly what they do not, so you can decide before you arrive rather than at the bus door.
The short answer
KTEL publishes a reduced fare column at 50% off, marked for large families and disability, and a student column at 25% off [Source]. It publishes nothing on step-free boarding, wheelchair spaces, pushchairs or luggage limits on its buses, and the airport says only that tickets for its bus are sold by the conductor [Source]. At the ports, the Port Fund lists disabled facilities at Athinios and prices the Fira cable car, including a luggage ticket [Source, Source].
Step by step
Luggage
- The airport bus runs to Fira, 10 minutes by KTEL's timing [Source]; anywhere else means a second bus from the Fira bus station with your bags.
- KTEL publishes no luggage rule. Expect to load bags yourself and ask the driver.
- From Athinios, a port arrival with heavy bags has no published bus time at all; the Port Fund lists taxis at the port and the municipality warns waits can be long in peak season [Source, Source].
- At Fira's old port, the cable car charges a luggage ticket: €3 on the Port Fund's price list [Source].
Luggage storage after checkout
No official source publishes a left-luggage service. The airport's services page lists parking, lost property, first aid, ATMs, currency exchange, car rental, Wi-Fi and a fast-lane service, but no baggage storage [Source]; the Port Fund's list of Athinios facilities names a waiting area with WC, an ATM and taxis, but no luggage storage [Source]. Ask your accommodation whether it will hold bags after checkout, and if you use a private storage service, confirm its address, hours and price yourself: this guide has no source for any.
Children and pushchairs
- The reduced fare column (50%) is marked for large families; KTEL's fare table does not publish a child fare or an age limit, so ask the conductor [Source].
- The cable car lists a reduced ticket of €3 for children [Source].
- The caldera villages are steps and lanes. For pushchairs, the flat seafront at Kamari and the long beach at Perissa are the easier bases; the municipality describes Monolithos as a shallow-water family beach [Source].
Reduced mobility and wheelchairs
- KTEL's reduced column is marked for disability; KTEL publishes no information on step-free boarding or wheelchair spaces [Source].
- The Port Fund lists disabled facilities among Athinios' services and a reduced cable-car ticket of €3 for people with special needs [Source, Source].
- The old port's alternative to the cable car is 587 steps [Source].
- Ask KTEL before you travel: +30 22860 25404, the number the Port Fund lists for buses [Source].
When a door-to-door transfer may be the better answer
With several bags, small children late in the evening or a ferry after dark, a transfer booked in advance removes both the change in Fira and the wait for a taxi. For a wheelchair it is an option only if the company confirms an accessible vehicle in writing: no source this guide uses lists accessible taxis or transfer vehicles on Santorini, so ask before you book. The airport and port pages carry the transfer option, after the bus answer.
What goes wrong
"Reduced fare" needs evidence: KTEL marks the column for large families and disability [Source] but does not say what proof it accepts. Carry the document and ask before boarding.
Not reachable by bus
- Fira's old port: no KTEL corridor; cable car, steps, or the buses and mini vans the Port Fund mentions [Source].
