Worth your time

What Monolithos does best

Named for the single volcanic rock that guards it, Monolithos is where Santorini’s families swim: a dark-sand beach with genuinely shallow water, rare natural shade from tamarisk trees, and tavernas that price for locals. If the caldera towns feel like a stage set, this is the island being itself.

Swimming for everyone

The water deepens slowly for tens of metres — the safest swimming on the island for small children, and the tamarisks throw real shade.

Local tavernas

The fish tavernas along the sand serve the neighbourhood as much as visitors; prices and pace follow suit.

The quiet end of the east coast

Walk south and the beach empties fast, with the wind-worked sandstone shapes for company.

Good to know

  • This is the closest published beach corridor to the airport side of the island.
  • Facilities are simple: tavernas, a playground, showers in season — bring anything fancier.
  • The sea can pick up with the summer meltemi wind; mornings are calmest.
